Default Missing splash shields?

I have a 2001 Civic and I'm wonderingi if something is missing. I noticed this weekend that there are no splash shields in the front wheel wells where the tie rod ends exit the engine compartment to attach to the spindles. This generation has the steering rack mounted on the firewall and then huge holes in the wheel wells to pass the tie rod ends through. It looks like there should be shields there but I can't be sure.

Thanks all!
Dave

Same question as above. I worked on a friends car and noticed the same concern. The hole in the wheel well is like 6" x 6" were the tie rod is located.

Can anyone confirm if there is a sheild or not?

I just replaced the complete splash shields on my sister's 2002 civic. When the front end was jacked up, you could see straight through to the other side from the wheel well. The replacement splash guards had the same effect. Unless there were extra parts, I assume it's supposed to be that way for ventilation or something.
