MPG disappointment in 08 EX
Hi All,
I'm new here, but was hoping to ask a question.
I've got a new EX and just put my second tank of gas in the car. I got less than 19 mpg on the first tank, but thought that maybe the dealer hadn't given me a completely full tank of gas. I don't drive aggressively, but tried to take it even easier for the second tank and got 19.9.
To give an idea of my driving style: I traded a Volvo V70T5 and was getting an average of 21 for day-to-day driving - this falls into the EPA estimates for that car. I get 33-34 on my wife's Camry Hybrid which is also fairly normal for that car. And to be honest I was hoping for excellent mileage out of the Civic and have been driving it accordingly.
I know there's heavier oil in the car and it is cold and hilly here in Pittsburgh. I've double-checked my tire pressure. I'll be giving service a call. I just want to make sure that I'm right in thinking that this falls outside of the normal range and that asking for a diagnostic is reasonable.
Thanks in advance.
Brad

Do you have an automatic or a manual transmission? just under 20 is pretty low. My 96 LX civic doesn't get less than 24 like ever... If your car is BRAND new, it will get a little worse mileage because the engine is breaking in still. Also, the cold weather and hills like you have will make a difference. How many miles do you drive at a time? If you are only driving 3 miles at a time, that is barely enough to warm up the engine and will result in really poor mileage. I suggest going through a couple more tanks and see if it improves.
I was getting about 28mpg right out of the dealership last spring in my 07 EX. That improved to mid 30's in the summer and now it is down to 25mpg in the winter. 19mpg for a new car in the winter may not be unrealistic. Go for the diagnostic anyway.
