Sure you can! You cant get it done anywhere but it CAN be done. You wont ever have to step on the clutch to start the car manually anymore either. Just make sure you never leave it in gear, cuz if you do and hit the autostart, your car will be "jumping" down the block until the battery dies.

Yes you can. I don't reccomend a "cheap brand", nor di I reccomend a DIY on ANY remote start. I do it as a pro and there is nothing that scares me more than when I have to fix a DIY. Now standard shift you have to do a clutch bypass on and that can be a little tricky figuring out wether or not you have to do a feed through or remove from circuit to make the car think that your pushing in the clutch. Next is tying in to the e-brake, its one wire, stupid easy. Then also depending on the make and manufacture of remote start sometimes you have to tie into the door triggers(most brands you will have to). Other brands are looking for a neutral safety switch. It sounds like its a little bit confusing because it is. A remote start is one of those products that should never have been introduced as a consmer friendly piece. I would caution you on the following if you believe you have the appititude to tackle this task and that is to stay awayfrom brands like DesigTech, and Bulldog, there product support consists of sending the unit back and them sending you a new one. THEY ARE GARBAGE!!!!!! those cheapy ones are cheap because they SUCK!!! Get a Compustar, Directed, Omega, or Prestige. All these brands I have found to be reliable, The Compustar and Viper pieces (astroflex if you insist on overpaying, very good pieces but VERY pricey). Those2(3) are probably the best brands on the market. Just personal experience.

Oh yeah, as an installer I REFUSE TO INSTALL Bulldog or DesignTech, even if it means telling the customer to bring it elsewhere and potentially losing a sale. But then again I take major pride in my work and like it when the product does work when I'm done.

Silly........there isn't anywhere here that has electronics other than walmart and radio shack so a diy is my only option unless you want to fly up here for the weekend. Are there instructions and wiring diagrams I can download from somewhere?

Theres an auto store in my area that jsut started offering it. They never offered ti before because of the whole starting in gear thing, to many lawsuits. Now they are so i guess something came out that will kepp the car from going if it is in gear. Some kind of transmission lock or something, idk.

think i would just forget about all this - but then if you are in north dakota (for all of you cold weather friends), would be nice to sit in a cozy warm house in the morning and do a remote start.
i remember when i was there in the late 80's (gosh i am getting old - but i was really young then ), it would be 20 below every morning.

Here is a substitute idea (do what i did). Go and buy one of those block heaters. Yes, they work unlike anything else. Your car will start off like it is 80 degrees outside, and have heat right away (as i remember). Dont buy any of the other kind of heaters, like an inline hose heater. that lasted me one night - that's right. they are junk!

ORIGINAL: fglaustin

buy one of those block heaters.
Did you see THIS ? Do you have any input? I'm thinking about doing both considering I live in Alaska and my recent diagnosis of extreme laziness.

no, did not until now.
so, you already know about them.
didnt you say that you put them in both the ranger and the f-150.

that one in the napa picture is not like the one i had in my 68 cougar and the one i put in my caddy here in texas. i still got the box of the one i put in the caddy. i cannot remember if i got it at jc whitney - no, wait a minute, pretty sure that i got it on a special order from western auto - since changed names and then bought by sears (think changed names again), and now i think sears do not own them and are now advance auto parts.

It is Zerostart freeze plug/immersion engine heater. think it was cheaper than jc whitney. made in usa by phillips temro, inc 9700 west 74th st, eden prairie, minnesota 55344.
has a winding copper element that makes a 90 degree turn.
instructions will tell you where to put it and how.
Or have you already done the other 2 ??

dont know if this will link:

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...e=1415&ptset=A

the 2 i bought (at vastly different times) both had the element that curved, and had a bolt that expanded the plug into the block. the one shown seems like it is to be screwed in - that does not make any sense ???
