Put a socket onto a ratchet wrench, and put that socket onto the top of the bolt/screw. "Lefty Loosey" and give it hell. Don't ever be afraid to put some muscle into it. That was my biggest set back when I first got into wrenching is that I was always afraid I was going to break something or hurt myself. But, I learned to suck it up, use some elbow grease, and get it done

what everyone is trying to say is that the bolt has a socket head as well as phillips, hook a 8mm socket on to a ratchet and give it hell...

You definitely want to get some metric sockets for the Civic. You can get a nice Craftsman set that includes both metric and American standard.

i actually bought the craftsman set 2day, i paid $70 for the kit, its pretty good, i got the air filter compartment to open with the sockets, man that thing was dirty so ichanegd that, but i tried the socket on my tranny filler bolt and it jus stripped it even more, then i tried using a vice grip, nothing either, i think im g=jsu gunna get a shope to crack it out and buy a new filler bolt to replace it , thanks for the feedback guys

dont the screws also have a 8mm bolt head. if they dont i would try some PB Blaster let it set for a few then try again. Or you can buy a tool that has a phillips on the end and you wack it with a hammer. I cant think of whats its call, but you usethis on rotors to get those little screws out.
The tool is called an Impact Driver. A must for every toolbox. You can see one here:
https://www.autobodytoolmart.com/p-12127-14933.aspx

This place also sells Craftsman tools.
