Default New here with a civic problem

Hi I'm new to this site. I just bought a 1997 Honda Civic. I've had it for about 2 weeks and up until yesterday it was running fine. Yesterday I cranked the car and while working on the upholstery, my foot hit the gas pedal. The engine revved into the red zone and immediately went dead. Now it only cranks over but won't start. What could be wrong?

Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a timing belt. Have you checked it?
