Normal Coolant Temp & Heater
The heater in my son's '95 was blowing cold and the temp gauge has been running about 140. The guy we bought the car from was a wannabe street racer so I figured he pulled the thermostat out along with all the other goofy mods he did. I figured right so we installed a new t-stat and replaced all thegaskets. Coolant temp is up in the 230-240 range now and the heater still blows cold. I saw in some other posts about clearing the cooling system of air, so I'll give that a try. Any other ideas?

1) Start by checking whether the coolant level is low.
2) Next check that the heater valve cable is properly connected to the heater unit under the dash and to the heater valve on the firewall where coolant hoses connect to the heater unit in the engine compartment (see picture). Also check whether moving the dash heater control lever moves the valve lever in the engine compartment. If not, try to manually open the heater valve in the latter location. If heat now blows, then you know the problem is with the cable mechanism.
3) The Troubleshooting Chart in the picture in my next post gives additional items to consider.

The previous owner may have disconnected the heater entirely. See if you have the two hoses from the engine thru the valve to the ports on the firewall. They are pretty much in the center of the car behind the engine. With the engine warmed up and running and the heat set on high, feel the hoses at the firewall. They should both be hot. If the hoses are hot then check the mechanism inside the car (top drawing on Ron's first picture). This is located on the bottom of the heater box under the center of the dash. When you move the temperature lever from cold to hot everything should move.
Thanks. PO did disconnect the heater hoses. However, they are all there. He rerouted the output to the heat exchange to the return from the heat exchange. Now I just gotta figure out which one is which.

I think the hose from the head goes to the valve then to the port on the right side of the car, the port on the left side of the car goes to the thermostat housing. Really it doesn't matter much which way the water flows.
Though it sounds like it was disconnected in a confused attempt to make the car faster, it could've also been disconnected because the heater core leaks. So keep an eye out for leaks after you reconnect it.

Cool. Thanks. That was the least confused attempt to make the car faster. We have 4" holes drilled all the way across the rear bumper cover, AC compressor removed, one of the radiators removed and interior panels removed. But its the car son wanted.
