O.K. so I get timing light and check my timing. I hook it up and check it. It is off so I move the dist. in small steps trying to get the marks to line up. I end up moving it as far as it will go and it still looks like this.

Did I do something wrong or is something messed up in my engine?

appears to me to be that.

need to take apart and remove the belt and set it to the timing mark (not to dead top center).

The belts are on the drivers side. Distrib. cap on the passenger side.

Ok. all the same.
been in that same situation.
did it a couple of times - realized that belt had slipped.
same response - need to reset - i would reset to the timing mark.

So I need to reset the timing chain to the timing mark? While I am doing that should I just have the chain replaced?

how many miles on it ?

if it does not have the miles on it to make it necessary - then no.
otherwise, yes.

check your engine timing(not the ignition timing)
although the ignition timing would affect MPG it doesnt change on its own but engine timing does when the belt stretches.
take it from the guy whos trashed two motors because i thought oh well ill just change that timing belt later.
these d-series motors are interference motors which means if your engine timing gets to far out of whack your valves slap your pistons and boom youre done. if its not throwing any codes from sensors i would bet money on the timng belt. my first one took a crap at 95,000.
