Default Oh great oil Gods and gurus.

My car just rolled over 130,000 and I am due for an oil change. I replaced the timing belt at 100,000 strictly as precausion. Anyway enough of that. My father thinks I should change over to synthetic oil. I am curently using vavoline 5w30 and was wondering what the pros and cons of switching to synthetic would be. Would you recomend it, what brand, what filter, how much(do you use more or less oil than normal) Engine is currently stock. Thanks in advance for the help.

I dont know any cons... but the new quaker stuff can run for 15k without changing. All in all it IS better to have senthetic, it help the durability last longer.

The con is 5 bucks a quart!

If anything I would switch to 10 30, but thats it. Is your motor running ok? Does it use oil?

Problem with the 15k mile oils is usally the filter wont last that long

Con: The only one I know of is the cost of the oil.

Pros: Reduces friction (gets around engine faster than regular oil), Increases Fuel Economy and Performance, Lowers Operating Temperatures, Easier Cold Weather Starting (doesn't get like molassis like regular oil), Extends Oil Change Intervals, and Extends Engine Life (Reduces Stress and Scuffing).

There are lots of thread about this if you want to do a search and read up. I read all of them and decided to switch to synthetic. the brand names I cam away with were:

AMSoil or Mobile 1 full synthetic for the oil and Mobile 1 or STP filters, but these are all up for debate. It's just what I got out of all of the reading I did on here.

I heard that "NAPA Gold filters" are supposed to be good.
