Was the car having starting problems when you brought it to the mechanic?

Check for spark at the plugs and sounds indicating that the fuel pump/main relay are working. When was the fuel filter last changed?

argh...i took off the pan and found the screw in it...luckily.....but after i put it back on my car wont kick over. it just keeps cranking. well it id start for a few seconds but died out almost imediatly...lol now i think i need another mechanic. funny hting is smog time is coming up and im gonna have to register my car as inoperative till i figure out whats wrong now
Why go to a different mechanic? He told you the truth when most mechanic would had kept his mouth shut. He was right that it would fell down to the bottom so ho harm done. I would stick with him, he made an honest mistake and told you about it and he was right that it would go down to the pan.

good point. OP can take it back to him and show the mech the screw and ask him for free work to fix the problem now because the OP had todo his work in terms of getting the screw back.

Was the screw fragmented or missing any chunks?

Does the engine turn over and fail to start or is it unable to turn over?

The screw seems to have dropped straight down to the oil pan, so hopefully any potential screw debris was cleaned out when you drained the oil and removed the oil pan.

With respect to the starting problem, begin with the basics -- spark and fuel.

wow way to blow it out of proportion. People make mistakes. ask him to fix it for free because he broke it. Don't jump into a law suit. Its pointless make an attempt to fix it. He will most likely do it for free. He sounds like a standup guy. And the fact that he didn't pul it out could be that he had to wait for it to get down there. couldn't that be true?
