Problems with the trip-meter?

Whenever I drive a mile or so my trip-meter goes up about 5-10 notches indicating that I have driven 5-10 miles, but I havn't.Do you know why it would be doing this? Does anybody have this same problem with your trip-meter not counting your miles right?

are you sure those are aren't tenths you're seeing?

like 1.0----1.1----1.2----1.3---and so on?
