Default resonator chamber problem

1989 DX 1.5L
Problem is air filter housing is no longer hooked to the resonator chamber. Someone cut everything out right below the air filter. Don't know if this was done in conjunction with putting the performance muffler on or what (which I plan on getting rid of anyway). Is this going to adversely affect my engine, or is it fine the way it is. I was thinking about putting a high flow washable air filter in.

What effect if any does the lack of this chamber have. Should I get a new air filter housing and reconnect to the chamber?

As long as dirty air can't bypass the filter and get into the engine, it's fine. The reason for that resonator was to make it quieter. So your car will be a little louder than stock but you also may get a little more performance.
