Simple Brakes Question
Are the emergency brakes seperate from the pedal brakes? Cause I think I need to change my emergency brake if so. I have notice that it doesn't catch as good or as fast anymore does anyone know how I could check them?
I'm pretty sure the emergency brake just locks up your rear drum brakes, if it seems unresponsive or doesnt work well there could be something wrong with the tension in the cable or something but i'm not sure exactly how you would verify or fix it
They both use the rear brakes. The hand brake handle is just a different way to engage the brake shoes or pads. You should inspect both rear brakes to make sure they are in good condition, and if they are drum brakes, in proper adjustment. Drum brakes are supposed to adjust themselves but if that stops working you will have excessive travel of the hand brake handle and the brake pedal.
Assuming the brakes are OK, you can turn a nut under the handle to tighten up the cable. I think this requires removing the interior trim around the hand brake handle.

Yea I wasnt sure if they were seperate or jus locked all of them up but I was wrong either way lol. I am taking a college class at the moment so I think Ill bring it in there shop to look at. I was just checking online to see if there was a way I could check at home. I dont even know what they would look like if they were wore down or needed to be switched.
I think I know what you are saying about the nut. I would have to unscrew the cover around the handle from the car to get to it, but how tight of tension does in need to be?
the tighter the tension the fewer clicks it will take to keep the car from moving (in my car about three "clicks" of the e-brake locks up the wheels pretty good, I have a friend whose e-brake you have to pull till its almost vertical lol), I just wouldnt try too hard to keep tightening once you start to feel resistance
