Is it hard to change the gauge cluster??

nope, on the 96-00 civics, unscrew the 2 phillips, take off the cluster bezel, and unscrew the other 2 phillips holding the cluster.

I have a 95' civic LX and it has an intermitent problem with the speedo. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. But the cruise still works when the speedo doesnt and I dont get any kind of engine codes. Judging from what was posted before, this leaves it as the cluster is the problem not the VSS??? Becuase the ECU and the TCU and the Cruise control all work so the only thing left is that the guage cluster is bad somehow. Can someone confirm this for me??

IS THIS TRUE??? This would eliminate the VSS being bad and i can just get a cluster.

Save yourselves some headaches and just replace the cluster. Mine did the exact same and I replaced it and the speedo started working again. The only prob I have with mine now is that it always reads 5 mph too fast and it has the correct tires it calls for so I bought a new speed sensor for it....that should fix it I would hope.

But yeah...replace the cluster and you guys should be back in business!!

I just swapped my cluster for an EX one, so that I could have the tach. I have the DX cluster with a speedo that has 88K on it. Just pay shipping and you can have the whole cluster. Speedo will fit any cluster 96-00.

Ok this is the second post I do about the same problem, My speedometer went out about a month ago and I read in this forum to check the speed sensor and I did and it looked like crap so I replaced it, then I replaced the cluster (Thank god for Ebay). and my speedo is still not working. What is left? Oh and I also checked the fuses and the guy I bought the car from had replaced the 15 amp fuse with a 30 amp fuse so I swicthed them out and disconnected the battery and removed the back-up fuse hoping to reset the ECU and the car in general. On a side note in case it helps solve my problem, the speedometer was the only thing not working, my odometer was fine.
