Default Speedometer/tach not working... gauge cluster?

Hello, I have a 95 Civic DX (manual), and the speedometer/tachometer are not working. I took it to a mechanic friend, and we played with pretty much every connection and fuse known to man with no luck. The CEL is *not* on. The fuel/temp gauges work.

I read many posts here, like this: https://www.hondacivicforum.com/foru...working-61784/... And I think it may well be the gauge cluster. Seems like the CEL would be on if it was the sensor.

I really don’t want to have to buy a new gauge cluster, especially because my miles are so low. I don’t care about the tachometer, but it’s nice to see the speed… is there a cheap aftermarket solution, or do I just have to replace that cluster?

if you need to replace the cluster, might as well do something neat with it!
try this DIY GSR cluster in a EG ( my way ) - D-series.org
or perhaps this! Civic EG :: View topic - A Ek cluster swap to a eg

This happened with my first civic. She was a 1992 with 240k miles. I just drove without knowing my speed, lol. Im interested to know what was wrong though because I had the same exact problem.
