Default Speedometer twitch/clicking from under hood (vss?)

I am working on a 1998 honda civic dx. My current problem is the speedometer, it twitches around 20 mph and there is a clicking sound coming from the v.s.s area. Every time I drive the car (especially in reverse) I hear a clicking sound and for every click the speedo needle twitches. Iv already replaced the v.s.s and the instrument cluster, this did nothing.

I read that it could be the v.s.s drive gear which is located in the trans, is that what it sounds like? And is this fixable without taking the transmission apart? Has this happened to anyone else?

No clue on the fix, but the transmission would have to be removed, and opened if there is a problem with the VSS gear.

A clicking sound as the car moves always makes me think CV joints first. Check all 4 joints for any rotational slack. There should be none. Bad outer joints will usually click worse when the steering wheel is turned all the way to one side or the other.

There is a plastic ring gear inside the transmission which drives the VSS. Transmission would need to be removed from the car to open it up and replace. This is pretty simple on a manual, don't know about automatic. If you do have a manual with more than 150,000 or so miles on it, the input shaft bearing is about to need replacing-- it is a weak point in the design and always wears out much sooner than the rest of the tranny. Could kill two birds with one stone.
