Speedometer wont work 89 civic

Question Speedometer wont work 89 civic

my 89 civic has a d15 (only saying that cuz idk if thats the stock) and the speedometer wont work and i got the code 17 how do i fix this i checked the speedo cable and everything seemed fine, is there a certain way to put it in the tranny or somthing? plzz help

Did you pull the cable all the way out of the housing to see if it is broken? You should find that the end is ground down square to drive the speedometer.

Transmission end of the cable has to be engaged with the tab on the side in the slot in the driver part. If it's all the way in it won't pull out without removing the clip. Of course the speedometer end can be improperly coupled too.

If that's OK lift one front wheel and put the car in neutral. When you turn the wheel by hand the cable driver should turn. If not the gear inside the transmission is probably stripped or broken, though that would be rare.

ok so ur saying that the end that is in the cluser i shouldnt be able o pull out from the tranny side unless its unclipped?

No, you shouldn't be able to pull the outer housing out of the tranny side with the clip on. When you have it out of the transmission you can pull the entire inner cable out of the housing and inspect it to see if it is broken. If it has broken you'll only pull half of it out and you won't get the square end that couples to the speedometer.

ok so i didnt pull the whole thing out i pulled the wire out that was in the cable and the whole cable was good
