Default tachometer lazy/erratic

Good afternoon. My timing is now set on the 94 Civic with the 93 drivetrain and cluster installed. It was off a tooth on the cam just as y'all suggested/knew. Now however I noticed that my tach shows zero at idle, then lazily comes up with revs. It is erratic at highway speeds, not as in jumpy, but as in reading too high, or so it seems. Was something jarred or disconnected during the timing belt reset or subsequent distributor setting during timing? Where exactly is the pickup anyway?

As always any help is appreciated.

Signal for the tachometer comes from the ICM inside the distributor, on the blue wire. Sounds more like the tach itself in the cluster is bad though.

Thanks MK. I'll put in a replacement tach that I have from the wrecked Civic and give it a try. Always appreciate your weighing in. Ed
