Default Tail light craziness 95 civic dx

Hello Guys & Gals, I am new to this board but was hoping that someone here could grace me with the knowledge to point me in the right direction for fixing my nelly belle. I have a 95 Honda civic dx with about 245,000 miles and she is still going strong. A few weeks ago I realized one evening that my rear tail lights are staying on even when the car is completely off. There is one light on the left side that does not come on.The brakes lights come on and off when the brakes are applied but the rear running lights just stay on no matter what. I have read a few post and have looked at the fuses under the hood and dash. I have also looked at the bulbs in the rear and all look fine no burnt bulbs any where. I have attached a picture that shows the car off with the lights on. I have just pulled the fuse for the rear tail lights until I get this problem solved. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do the front parking lights and dash lights also remain on?

Sounds like the light switch may be bad.

Take the plastic top and bottom covers off the steering column and unplug the light switch. If the lights go out when you do that, replace the switch. If not, someone has probably modified the car wiring. Look for crossed wires behind the radio or for an aftermarket alarm system.

dito. sounds like the combination switch needs replaced. and that one bulb is just burned out replace it with a new bulb. you can always just run a switch to it. or do alittle replay work and hook it up to the ignition so they are only powered when the key is on.

No Ron, the front park lights or dash light does not remain on. But now that you mentioned it I have notice that the lights would dim every once and a while and the radio would just shut off and turn back on by itself. Also mk378, the radio in the car is the factory radio that has been in the car since 1995. I will replace the bulb first and see if that fixes the problem, although when I pulled the bulb out originally it was fine the filament was not broken on either strand. I will change the bulbs and get back with you guys ASAP!!!

Hello All, well I just replaced the bulb but no change, and lights are still on. Also took top and bottom cover from off of the steering wheel and disconnected the 7p and 4p connectors from the combination light switch and the lights are still on. Any idea on what I should do next?

thx

Sounds like the Red/Blk wire for the tail lights has been cut and spliced to a hot wire from the battery. To find the problem, trace the Red/Blk wire at the tail lights upstream toward the switch.

ya thats very odd... but if you can pull the fuse and they go off then i would say time for some custom wiring....

get some decent size wire ruffly 12gauge ruffly afew feet should do, a inline fuse holder, a 12volt relay, 2 male spade terminals, and 5 female spade terminals. and one ring terminal and either a self tapping screw OR use a existing screw under the dash on the metal bracing.
wire it up JUST LIKE THIS.
use one male spade terminal and hook it up to the INLINE FUSE holder and plug it into the fuse box where the fuse GETS power (test with a simple 12volt light tester with the fuse removed) and put that fuse in the new fuse holder when your done wiring everything that is.
now with the fuse holders other end- run that wire to the (87) on the relay, then run the (30) on the relay to another wire with a male spade terminal on it ran back to the fuse box.
now (85) simple ground wire to anything metal under the dash.
and now with the light tester again probe the wires on the fuse box that are not used, they are the ones that look like the male spade terminals, when you find the one that has power ONLY with the ignition turned on. tape into that one and run that wire to the relays (86) terminal. and your done.
now your lights do not get power unless the ignition is turned on.

it doesn't solve the actual problem BUT it does bypass it.

Hello All, I am so embarassed to say this but it wasn't the running lights that were out it was the brake lights that are the problem. The bulbs are all fine I think that it might be the brake light switch but wanted to see what you guys might think.

THX.
