That ticky sound when you push the stick shifter while in gear?
I guess I have a couple questions about the behavior of a manual transmission.
1. How come when I hit the gas to accelerate, or when I let up to coast, I see the stick shifter move in or out just a little bit, not slip out of gear or anything, just move?
2. How come if I push it "further" into gear while driving I hear a sound not unlike a ratchet spinning, or some kind of fast metal-ticking-sound? Like, if you shift into 5th gear, and you let out the clutch and are moving in fifth, but you -keep pushing the stick shifter-? Its not that I do this for fun, I'm just curious about it, see question #3!!!
3. I hear a bit of a ticking noise -all- the time when I'm going down the highway in 5th gear, 4th too, and it basically has 2 distinct types of ticking noises, one for when i'm accelerating, one for when I'm coasting. Its made worse if I push on the shifter as in question #2.
Could this be bearings in the manual transmission that are getting shot? Wobbling around and when I lean on the stick shifter I kinda change the pressure on the bearing and cause a new noise? Not sure why the sound would change immediately as I let off the gas though. Maybe its just the linkage that connects the stick shift to the actual transmission shafts that it moves?
Thanks for any info!

If there's a lot of movement by the shifter during acceleration or deceleration, then check the motor mounts, especially the rear one.
Not sure about the ticking, but it could be a sign of a failing transmission. Does the clicking go away when the clutch pedal is depressed?

Some movement in the shifter during acceleration or at initial point of deceleration is completely normal, just about all manual trans cars will do this. Your motor and transmission do not always sit in one exact position.
As Ron mentoined, if it seems excessive, you may want to look at the motor mounts.
Most car manuals (including yours, I'm sure) tell you that you're not supposed to hold, press on, or force the stick in any direction after you've put it in gear (your hands should be on the steering wheel anyway). You're forcing the shift forks further into the transmission (which I'm sure you know, is filled with moving parts).
As for the constant ticking, that is hard to diagnose. But if you don't want it getting worse, stop playing with your stick!
