Default Torque Converter knowledge needed!

OK, I have a 1996 1.6 coupe with an auto trans. The trans went out and I got another one from a 1998. I went to install it and was going to simply use my torque converter from my 96 but it will not go on. I can not seem to get a straight answer from anyone about this. Some people tell me that the converters are all the same all the way from 1992-2004 and some people are telling me this trans wont even work in my car. I know it will work if I can figure out this converter problem and I know there is someone that has ran into this and can help me. Any advice @ all would be a godsend!

it depends on the base model, dx ex 96-98 99-00
are you sure the new trans came from a 98? count the splines on the shaft then count them on the inside of the converter

I am sure of the year because it has the vin on the side of the trans...1HGEJ6226WL036207... but I'm not sure what model. Is there somewhere online where I can put in the vin and find out? Also, I counted the splines and they seem to be correct. The difference appears to be that the part sticking out of the torque converter is longer than the space it goes in on the trans side.
