Manual or automatic? If automatic have you checked the fluid level? (Automatics you pull the dipstick and check with the engine running). When "the gears are not there" and you try to make the car move, does the speedometer go up even though the car is not moving?

Mine (2004 Honda Civic EX Sedan) just did this today. I took my son and his friend paintballing and when we went to leave the car was in Reverse but when my son went to put it in Drive the transmission didn't engage. The car is stuck in Neutral and I have to have it towed to the local tranny shop. I did notice that as I put the car in different gears the speedometer would go up even though the car did not move.

Any ideas what this is? I was thinking my transmission cable broke but maybe that is just wishful (cheap) thinking.

When the speedometer goes up but car doesn't move it is NOT a transmission problem. One of the CV axles has broken or pulled out of the transmission and disengaged, so the transmission is not connected to the wheels any more.

Default 2004 civic lx auto trans slip

Hey I have an issue as well; I’ve got a 2004 civic Lx auto trans with 156,000 miles on it. When I start it up when cold in the morning I can drive for a couple minutes and then it goes to shift into a new gear and I lose all gears. I pull the car over, shut it off, start it back up and I can move for another minute or so before losing all gears. I have checked my inner cooler line to make sure that it’s not clogged(it has really good flow) I drained the fluid and added new so it is full and nothing has changed. Any suggestions? Closest auto shop is 45 minutes away and no way to get there.
