trouble shifting into first gear

I have a 97 civic and i am having a hard time shifting into first gear. It takes every bit of strength to get it into first. Reverse is hard too, once I get it into second the rest is ok. What is the problem?

Is the car rolling while your trying to put it in first? if so then its a safety feature for 4 cylinder engines.

01 civic shifting into 3rd gear will grind unless clutch is held in for awhile or under 3000 rpms
