Default What ECU do I have?

Idrive a 95' EX with a 98' D16y8. I looked at the ECU and it is a P28.
Is that the right one? Or does it matter?
I'm just a little confused.

I have no idea. I think the guy who had the car before me only changed the motor and not the ecu.

thats not good, I'd get to lookin for an ecu. Keep in mind 96-98s & 99-00 ecus for the y8 are different

You can have the P28 chipped to Y8 maps. It's pretty easy to do if you have the right know how. Visit http://www.pgmfi.org and visit the WIKI for more info. There are forums there that are slammed packed with information on how to go about doing it. I personally have a JDM D15B VTEC in my Civic Hatch and am running a P28 programmed to P08 maps (JDM Civic VTi - my motor came in this car). I had to do an OBD-1 conversion but you are already past that step.

Would it be easier to buy a ecu for the y8?

No, Y8 is 96-00 (OBD-II) and is a pain in the **** as it would require you to make/purchase an ECU conversion harness.OBD-1 is easier to modify and has less emissions sensors etc.
