Default Wiper motor slow when cold outside

Webought a '97 EX for our son at college. Got cold outside last night (45deg F) and this morning the wipers only worked on high. Winters is coming and now I am concerned. Any ideas?
Thanx

Was this on a cold motor or did you let the car warm up?

Perhaps the low-speed component of your wiper switch is faulty and worsened by the cold. If you have and know how to use a multimeter, the picture may help you perform an electrical test on your wiper switch.

I think the motor has seperate brushes for low and high, if the low brush is worn out you would get that. Check the diagram for the motor plug and see if voltage is reaching the motor when the switch is on. Also it's possible if it is the motor brush that tapping on the motor may get it started briefly.

Anyway you need to diagnose carefully between the switch and the motor because they're both expensive.

As usual, mk378 provides some very sound advice. Here's how you troubleshoot the wiper motor:

The wipers only worked on high when I first fired the car up. By the time I had taken it to work (approx 20 min.) everything was fine.
I have a couple of questions. 1) I figured out how to remove the cowl cover. That was easy. Where can I get both styles of plastic retaining clips? 2) In the "Wiper/Washer Switch Test" it says to remove the driver's dashboardlower cover (see Section 20). Where is Section 20? If I get a Chiltons manual, will that do me?
I appreciate all of you help.

You should be able to get the clips from the Honda dealership. Other more knowledgeable members may have additional suggestions.

The picture shows how to remove the driver's dashboard lower cover.

Good luck. I hope the fix turns out to be inexpensive.

In reguards to the SRS, what procedures and precautions do I need to take. I have never been under the dashboard.
Thanks again, all of you have been great.

Thanks RonJ,
It seems that all I really need to do is wait more than 4 mins or so and even then try not to bump the SRS unit.
Where do you get all this from? You have been a great help
