You also need the entire blower motor set-up that's located under the dash as well.

You get a bigger intake tube and filter, essentially, you should have quicker response. However, you will still be constricted by the throttle body, which is stock, Intake Manifold, which is also stock, etc etc.

Be careful with a CAI, the filter is positioned behind the front bumper. Dip into a deep enough puddle/mini-lake, you'll suck water up and hydrolock your motor.

can i get a new manifold or throttle body to make a difference? they appear to be affordable, if so what specific kind would make a difference, what other things can i do to make this automatic better?

Plain and simple, bolt ons will not yield alot extra power to the wheels. You could slap on an upgraded Intake, IM, TB, header, Cat. converter, and exhaust system, and maybe get about 5-10 hp max.

What is your meaning of "affordable"?

I wouldn't mess with something like a Skunk2 of Blox TB, the smallest I have seen is 66mm (your stock is 56mm I think). 66mm = wayyy too big unless you have a beast NA motor, or forced induction system. Check out something like a GSR, or SI TB if you want to upgrade it, but it really won't help all that much on a basically stock motor.

I just saw you are in Cali. I'm sure you're familiar with the whole CARB approved stuff for aftermarket add-ons.

First off, I would say get a y8 Intake manifold and TB. Once you are comfortable with what you are doing, I would suggest to look into a mini-me swap, basically taking off your y7 head and putting a y8 Vtec head on. You would need a few other things such as a P2P ECU (from a 96-98 EX), vtec solenoid (can come with the y8 head), etc. You'll have about an extra 10 hp and you'll now have vtec. sweet

My 2000 HX vtec D16 is defiantley much quicker than the non-vtec version of the same car......It's worth the couple hundred it will cost.
