WASSUP! Matt from Cali! I just picked up an '89 Honda Civic from my idiot stepspon for $100!!! He said there was all kinds of things wrong with it but turns out all it needs is new C.V. joints!I have given it a tune-up incl. MSD cap n rotor Iridium plugs and 8.5 mm wires.New ignitor oil change...etc.It has 175k but still seems very strong. It has a b15a motor what can I do short of an engine swap that will give me more horses? How many horses can I expect?thanks for the input. MATTALLICA!

Congrats and welcome to HCF! I know very little about engine upgrades myself, but the usual performance suggestions begin with header, intake, and exhaust. I'm sure someone will chime in with some numbers you can expect from these upgrades. Best of luck to you...

I'm guessing he means d15....b series are all dohc.

As a general rule of thumb go with IHE (Intake, header, exhaust). I'm not too sure how much power that will give you on your engine (it can vary a lot from vtec to non-vtec), but i would put in a guess around 10-14 whp. If you really want to make more power though your best bet would be an engine swap, and if the engine does already have 175k on it that might not be a horrible option.

Good luck with the ride and welcome to the forum!

You could do a mini-me swap. It isn't an engine swap, you pretty much get a cylinder head from a VTEC engine and install it on your non-vtec car. You could also rebuild the engine with new pistons, rods, and crankshaft, etc. I dunno how much money you have to play with, the rebuilding of the engine is gonna cost you a bundle especially if you have to pay someone for the work. You could also get a turbo kit, or all three.
