I used to have a Volkswagon that did that and it turned out to be the fuel filter. Don't know if that helps or even applies here but you know, I have to chime in anyway. Oh, and my GSX-R wouldn't start when it got hot and that turned out to be carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. Apparently carbon deposits get really hot and glow, kinda like a deisel glow plug, and that glowing hot pinhead of carbon will cause pre-ignition and make it a bee-otch to start. Does it sound like the battery is dying if you try to start it when it's hot?

Not cooling at all? Maybe water pump or even the temp sending unit. Are we sure it even has coolant in it? They can't be that inept, huh?
For $1000 you maayyy be able to squeeze a B16 in there but I wouldn't count on it. You could just get a D16Z6, the Ex motor. They usually go for ~300 and it'll bolt right in.
