no, you don't need an intercooler, but you do want one. A certain level of pressure is not going to damage a turbo, it will damage your motor. The most you should run unintercooled on a T25 is around 4-5 psi.
4-5 lbs of boost? No way...it will handle atleast 7-8 without NEEDING an intercooler if tuned properly and running premium gas.
And like said... dont worry about that turbo. The motor will let you know when you are half way close to hurting the turbo, lol

at 7-8 psi non intercooled he'll be running crazy EGTs...cats will become a consumable

I didn't say it can't, I just said it was unjustifyable stress...I would not want to run all day long with ridiculously high temps... an intercooler can be had for like $80 at a junkyard ($85 in my case) and some pipe for like $30-50 if you don't go fancy and do crush bent...no reason not to do it.
