To turbo a vtec, or a non-vtec, that is the question
Hello, I been on these forums for quite a while, but now I actually need help
i'm running a 96 DX stock.
I'm aiming to do the mini-me in a few months, but I wonder if its worth it..
the mini me will cost me about $600 to do, its a little more than 1 paycheck [college student] and i'm looking to turbo by june when i finish my semesters. But my brain keeps telling me, if I do the mini-me, i'll lose out on $600 to buy my turbo.. anyone got some words of advice/suggestions?
should i go ahead and save up the money for a turbo?
or...
just the the mini-me, have some patience and than turbo?

i definitely would want to swap a b series, but after reading up on doing a turbo SOHC, i took a lot of interest.. so thats where my question originated, boost the the non-vtec, or get the y8 head if its going to make a huge difference or not

hmm it must be better than the y8, b/c a shop owner in town told me the exact same thing
i also read that the manifold is better flowing from the y8, would the manifold fit up with the z6? or do i just do the z6 swap with only z6 parts with the exception of a y8 head gaskets

put the $600 towards the turbo, and include head studs. If you have a mellow boost setup, headstuds, and tuned properly, you're going to be much happier than you would be with the mini-me. Granted you're going to need more than $600, but again, do you wanna spend $600 on 20-30 horsepower, or $1500 on 100 horsepower?
BUT, before you tackle the turbo project, compression/leakdown test your D to see what kind of condition it's in.

i was going to do a stock turbo as well as you, but after half way through my turbo project i decided to build my bottem end going the vitara/fjt rod way. you can just find a short d16 block for cheap and a vtec head, or use your non vtec head, and use your current engine as a donor, im going with a z6 block and crank with my stock y8 head (ill get higher compression w/ it over a z6) on my ex. all in all you can do a bottom end build for $600. it will be worth it in the long run and as far as a z6 vs y8 IM the Y8 is proven to flow better than the z6 but it might not be as good for F/I because creates a swirl...ive heard. but on N/A the y8 IM is the dominant one and is 30% bigger
