What causes this to happen? And what is it called. Happens in GT4 every so often and I have always wondered about it.

I don't know what it's called, but I think it happens when the combustion doesn't take place completely in the combustion chamber, like it's supposed to. Think about it, if the spark takes place at bdc of the power stroke, the fire will be pushed out on the exhaust stroke. I'm just theorizing though. Probably wrong...

It happens when you're running a little too rich at high rpms. The gas takes more time to completely burn, thus burning even after exiting the cylinders.
The way I see it, it cannot be good for the car since you're not harvesting all the available power.

I thought that it happened when the unburned gas vapor is pushed into the exhaust pipes and it gets ignited when it comes into contact with the air at the tip. Thus the flames. I could be wrong though.

A small flame comes out if you run straight pipes and rev it hard. And they also sell kits that are called flamers? or flame kits (they are on ebay) But they look real bad in my opinion.
