Okay so ive owened bought my civic with 176k from my buddy about a year ago. It currently has 198k..I needed brakes badly. When I brake my whole steering wheel shakes like CRAZY. that pretty much sums it up. I told my friend to just change the brake pads like 10k miles ago and it stopped the problem for a little while but over time he told me if I didnt change my rotors and calipers that the pads would wear down much faster than they should...or something like that so my question is.

What exactly do I need to buy to get my brakes

sounds like your brake rotors need to be resurfaced or swapped out new ones.

but if you want EXCELLENT brake performance, you need to go with an aftermarket big brake kit with high performance brake pads.

and doing a rear drum brake conversion to disc brakes will do wonders too, as would using braided steel brake lines for all four wheels.

don't forget though, that any high performance upgrade is going to cost money.

if you're wallet is hurting, then save up for a big brake kit first.

 

I dont want my brakes to be excellent....I was just sayin...

I am el cheapo when it comes to my car. the body is crazy dented up and I have the worst paint job EVAR...but I really do need brakes. So im looking to get my brakes halfway decent again for the smallest amount of money possible...im thinking new rotors on the fronts, new pads on the fronts...the rears dont seem to be making any noise or anything I think its all coming from the fronts...I really dont want to buy calipers cuz they are so much more expensive...but if I have to then I will but do you think just rotors and new pads will do the trick for now?

 

new rotors would probably be good, look into aftermarket blanks, they'll be cheaper than oem ones and just as good if not better. oem pads are fine if u dont really care much about aggressive braking, but again, look into aftermarket pads as they'll prolly be cheaper and better. i highly suggest checking ur rear drums/shoes. even tho it may not make any noise, ur shoes could very well be unevenly worn and that would be due to bad drums so new drums and shoes would be in order.

 

funny but check ur shocks too. i ran into some problems with my car, ended up getting new struts... as i was searching on some info about struts and shocks(since its my first car and i dont know much...) i found this...and it mentoned something about brakin problems. read on

my car did rock back and fort when i was braking...and did swere to the left when i was braking also... my whole suspension is beeing changed and i,m jsut waiting on a LCA(damn oem!!) and my car is back on the road...hopefully thigns will brake better.

anyone? I ordered the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and fuel filter so far

 

my car was shaking too a few months ago. all i got were new rotors and it have stopped perfectly since.

 

break down and buy a genuine OEM Honda thermostat. It's not that expensive.

aftermarket ones are hit or miss. I changed my brother's thermostat a few months back with an autozone version and it crapped out less than a month later.
