Default Springs or full kit??

Hi Guys,
I have been looking around and gettin mixed ideas from everywhere i look, so i need a final answer.....
Is it ok to lower a 1995 civic 3-door 40mm using just springs or do i really need to get shocks as well?? I am kinda on a budget so would only be able to afford a cheap set of shocks, so was wondering if there really is that much difference in handeling or not??
Cheers
chris

the reason why i ended up getting struts was that when i went to change my springs over, stuff started to break. so i ended up changing my struts anyway and wasting atleast two hours. is 40mm about 1.8"?

yer, sorry i forgot in the US you use inches rather than mm!!
40mm is about 1.8"
I am also considering a 60mm (about 2.5") drop, which i know would have to use shocks, but i have heard that might cause other problems like stiff ride and bottoming out - any of this true??

ok..if you want some set of springs that will work with your shocks, try tein s-tech,its about a 1.8 drop,iv had them for about a year or longer with my stock struts and love them,in there add for the s-techs it actually says its made to work with your factory shocks, here are 5 links from people that have already installed them on here, myself, mynmisoli, 97_nw, x2100 and 05 civic

.....if you go with a 2.5 inch drop, your deff going to need aftermaket shocks and a camber kit to pervent your tires from going like this / \ ...and you need a good set of really stiff springs else you will bottom out over bumpy roads, if your going to lower it that much..i would get some coil overs so you can adjust the hight, but then your looking into a couple hundred for a good set

if i were you, id go no lower than 2.25 at the MOST. i scrape and im only lowered about 2 on tein stechs. and thats with no lip too. also, id go ahead and get new shocks. put EVERYTHING in at once to save time/money in the long run, i learned this the hard way.

Its not hard to install them at all. Unfortunately I needed a camber kit, but a lot of people luck out and dont need one. Hopefully mill$ will come by with his stech post
