So I'm looking to put new wheels on my 96 hatchback, I was thinkin 18's but the wheel wells look hellasmall, will 18's fit? If so what size tires would I have to run on them. If I go with 17's whats the biggest tires I could run without problems?

18 will probably work but there might be some rubbing especially when you turn your steering wheel. i'll stck to 17 or lower. Recommended tire size for 17 is 204/40/17
