Default Wheel Offset

Im from England and modding Civics isn't as big over here as it is in the US, so need sum help! i was lookin 2get some new rims - 17" 205/40/r17 but was not sure if they would fit, especially the offset fitment. The rims i wanted had an offset ET 48, while i think the recommended value was ET35 - 45. would having rims with a larger offset fit or cause ne problems?? i read sumwhere that the offset can be 5 - 7mm bigger then the standard spec?? i drive a '99 civic hatch.

ne help would be greatfully recieved

Thanx
