91 5 Speed Trans - Fallen Speedo Gear

91 5 Speed Trans - Fallen Speedo Gear
I just did the clutch on a 91 civic 5 speed with a friend. When we disconnected the speedo cable at the trans, I pulled the bolt and clamp plate before I realized its just held in by a clip. As I read the manual afterwards ($#@!), I realized that this clamp plate holds the speedo gear in place and now its fallen in the tranny.
The tranny shifts fine and drives OK and the cable clipped back on the tube but doesn't engage with the speedo gear. So we've got no speedometer.
What can I do to fix this now? Am I screwed? Do I have to teardown the tranny to fix this?
Any tricks to pulling this speedo gear back into place?
Is it fallen to a safe spot in the tranny where I can just insert a new one from the top and leave the other one in there?
TX
