is there a way to adjust the ratios on your gears so that you can go into certain gears at perfect points speed wise? so you could always be cruising at optimal rpm and get better mileage?

or would i just end up getting a transmission that would be a simple swap, and have about the ratios that i wanted
i want to shift into 5th at a pretty high speed so that cruising on the highway is at a lower rpm... much lower

if so, any ideas on a transmission that would do this trick

you would need a custom set of gears to do this, and the right tire size and final drive in the differential. honda does a really good job of gearing there cars so they always have the power, or economy the car is ment to have. the price of building a custom tranny is problably worth more than the car you would be putting it into.

if you want a economy car look for a cx or vx tranny, which from your sig it shows you have a vx.

if you want performance look to a si tranny, because they have the closer gear ratios and higher final drive that a vtec engine loves.

you could mix and match gears in your tranny to get something that you would like, but nothing is gonna be perfect, you cant really have the best of both worlds until you add more than 5 or 6 gears.

 

could i just keep like the vx tranny but put the 5th gear from an si into it or whatnotto be at lower rpm's on the highway?

how hard is it to mix/match gears, like to have a tranny and pull out the 5th gear that's in there and put the other one in?

would i have to stick to just any eg tranny, or could i look at possibly an acura model that has it's ratio's more spread out, or maybe the del sol Vtec, with 160 horsepower, if that had a more spread out gear ratio

 

or could i just get the 6th gear of a 6 speed and put it in there?
obviously it would have to be a specific 6 speed

i found a ratio chart, but when looking at the ratios, am i correct when saying that the lower the number, that means you can potentially go to a higher speed in that gear (pending actual engine power) correct? so i'd want the lowest gear ratio i could find, so that i shift into top gear as high a speed as possible.

the si and vx 5th gear is the same ratio

Your best bet would be to mix and match different oem gears/final drives to make your optimal transmission. For example, here are two D-series transmissions I may build (keep in mind even among the same engine series (D, B, K, H) some transmission components won't fit together without modification):

Street turbo D15:
1st- 3.25
2nd- 1.9
3rd- 1.25
4th- .909
5th- .702
Final- 3.88
These are common 1-5 gears found in the Z6, and JDM D15B. The final drive is from DOHC ZC's.

All motor race D15:
1st- 3.181
2nd- 1.944
3rd- 1.347
4th- 1.033
5th- .823
Final- 4.9

This is the D16A1's (old integra) 1-5 with SRR (aftermarket) final drive.
