Default axle bearing?

Hello all! Been a while since I've been around......
Anyway, I've got a slight problem with my 98 5 speed. As I'm driving down the road I'm getting a grinding/rubbing noise coming from the front end. It does not make a difference either if I have the clutch in or out and I still get it. I can hear it almost wine down as I come to a stop as well.

I've spent some time trying to figure out what the problem is. I've checked brakes (rotors, calipers), made sure the axles were all the way in at the tranny, checked the back of my tires and rims to make sure there were no groves worn. I spin my wheels on each side tosee ifI can hear any noise coming from the tranny and I'm not getting any, one side at a time btw. I'm pretty much at a lost and have been reading on here to see what I can find, andit sounds like a bearing..... Just not sure what bearing? Axle or tranny? What's the processof replacing one, is there awrite-up on here? I work on all my vehicles too btw..... Thanks for your time in advanced!

Make sure your tranny isnt low on fluid. It makes a whining noise if it is low.

Sorry, forgot to mention I checked that too. The fluid level was full....... Thanks though.

Also too, the wheel bearing idea was eliminated too. If I turn the wheel either way it makes no difference. It continues no matter what....

Check the tranny oil for metal shavings. If there are metal shavings, your synchros might be on thier way out.

Found the problem, and it wasn't the tranny or bearings.
It turned out to be the retaining nut that holds the axle shaft on. About a month ago I replaced my drivers side axle shaft cause the the cv joint was destroyed. Apparently I did not make enough of a indent into the nut where it's suppose to be beat into the axle slot (not sure what the correct term is). So anyway, it worked itself loose and was causing one hell of a racket. Problem solved, thank god .
