How often should the manual transmission fluid be changed?!?! I have 140,000 miles on it and have no clue on previous transmisson oil change. is it worth it to get it done?!?!

 

i have a 91 civic. I asked this question...well something similar and some people said if its not giving you problems dont change it. I changed it because i thought it shifted kind of tough, and now it does shift smoother. But i was surprized to find out that i had to put regular motor oil instead of that gear oil that i was used to. So after putting some valvoline max life in it, i had a good ride. I had heard from some people that 100k miles is a good time to change it, but theres no written rule that i found. Maybe someone knows of this otherwise and its just not a common knowledge thing.

 

guys, its 2 qts of oil. costs about 5-8 bucks to put the really good stuff in and takes all of 15 minutes. do it every 50k, and saying if its not giving you problems dont worry about it is like saying that with your engine oil. if you dont change it, it will eventually cost you a tranny.

 

They say you should change it at 65000 and you can use 10-30 oil. I use royal purple in mine shift is alot smoother.

 

i used mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w-20. it works great. i even poured a little MMO in there. supposedly the thinner oil will help with frictional losses in the tranny. makes sense to me, and i went with synthetic for extra protection.

 

Wow people what have u been doing? You should change it evey 35,000 miles and u dont use gear oil on a honda u use 20-50w reg or SAE not 5-30 or 10-30 thats for your motor and is way too thin!

I have a 2002 Civic LX, Non-VTEC with the 5 speed and it recommends to change the tranny fluid at 96 000 km or 60 000 miles. I'm not sure what kind of oil is used since the honda fluid just said: "Honda Manual Transmission fluid". However the manual says that 10W30 or 10W40 is a suitable, part-time, substitute and they recommend removing the 10W30 or 10W40 as soon as possible.

Honda recommends 10w-30 or 10w-40. so 5w-20 or 5w-30 isnt too thin, its thinner than stock, but most everything we do to our cars is about pushing the envelope. and im using synthetic, so that should make up a little for the thinner oil, and it wont break down forever.

 

How exactly do you drain and refill it. I imagine that for draining, there is a draing plug, but what aboutre filing?!?! There aren't any filters or anything that needs to be replaced either right? I wouldn't imagine so, just curious....

 

10w - 40... all the time... NO EXCEPTIONS
