Default need info on DIY tranny swap...

i just cant stand losing money on my car anymore. i want to change my own tranny at home. all i know about changing the tranny is that the wheels and axles have to come off. thats the only thing i know and can do for sure. i dont have any air tools, but my bro has a 7000 dollar tool box. so i have plenty of tools. also have the honda service manual.

my questions are...
1.will i need air tools FOR SURE? or just maybe because there might a hard nut...
2.will the tranny, clutch, and flywheel just come off as a unit? or will i have to take em' off one by one?
3.how high will i have to lift the car?
4.i heard a trick about taking off one or two engine mounts, not sure. but its supposed to tilt the engine and tranny so the tranny will come off easier and at an angle. heard about this trick??

i just need as much info about a tranny swap as possible, thanks.....

Hey there, I just swapped mine in my 93 civic. So, here's what you do, go to this site: http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Civic/ and download your manual.
If you have a 92-95 civic, the trans removal section is 13-4 to 13-7.

Here's was you do:
1.Disconnect negative battery cable
2.Remove air intake system
3.Disconnect the start cables and transmission ground wire.
4.Remove engine harness clamp
5.Disconnect the back-up light switch and speed sensor connectors
6.Remove clutch pipe bracket and slave cylinder (NOTE: DO NOT operate clutch pedal after removing slave cylinder)
7. Remove the transmission housing bolts and the starter.
8. Remove driveshafts
9. Remove exhaust downpipe
10. Remove shift rod and extension rod
11. Remove splash guard and front stopper bracket (mount)
12. Either hoist the engine with a lift (like the maunal reccomends) OR with a piece of wood on the jack, jack up the engine by the oil pan. ONLY jack it up high enough to remove pressure off of the engine mounts. (so, jack it up just A LITTLE)
13. Remove the left (passenger's side) upper transmission mount
14. Remove clutch cover
15. Remove rear transmission mont bolts.
16. Pull away transmission until it clears the mainshaft.

the first time you swap a tranny is a learning expeirience, be ready to get frustrated as hell, but after the first time, you can swap one out in an afternoon

I'm thinking of doing the same thing on a 97 Civic Ex. Basically the same process?

(sorry for jacking the thread)

Do you think I should swap the tranny myself or have a professional do it?

I'll awnser the air tool parts. You might very well need them!! At least the impact. I needed it for my axle nut, I broke my breaker bar with it, and then I tryed with a snap-on breaker bar, but it would turn in the brakes... Then with the impact, after some fooling around, I got it out.
