Default older autos shift harder?

i know this is not an accord forum but will post here anyways.
I have a 2000 civic ex coupe with stick shift. I plan on storing it for the winter and i test drove 2 accords today.
One was a 1994 ex coupe with auto tranny and the other was a 91lx sedan with auto tranny.
I noticed that when accelerating, they both seemed to shift much harder then my civic does.
i am not sure if it is because they are older and most older cars are like this and maybe it is just that i am used to driving a much newer car or maybe it is because mine is a stick.
I was just wondering if it is normal for older hondas with auto trannys to shift like this.
thanks

older accords are known to shift pretty hard. but if your starting to hear stuff that doesnt sound good. like grinding metal. than its a pos.
