Power not transferred to the wheels
2002 Civic, Auto trans.
Was stuck in rush hour, rather hot day, when I felt a slight shake/vibration. Lost power to the wheels even though the engine was running. In other words, pressing the accelerator would rev the engine, but no power was transferred to the wheels and the vehicle would not move forward. It was like I was stuck in neutral. This was true for all gears.
Pulled over to the side of the road. Turned off engine. Cranked the ignition ON, but still no power to the wheels. After the tow, the car momentarily had some power, but then quickly showed the same problem.
For a couple weeks now, I could hear a faint whining sound.
Has anybody experienced this or do you have any suggestions on what has failed? Is this NOT a transmission problem? I really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.

Thanks, guys.
One other note, the car was able to roll, either on a decline or by manually pushing it, no problem. So does that rule out a broken axle?
Also, if it is the transmission fluid, how did it become low? I did not notice any leaks over time in my parking space. I assume there is natural loss of fluid over time to heat/friction. What is the typical life transmission fluid once refilled?
I apologize if I'm asking questions with obvious answers.
Thanks again.
