Default shifting parameters

I have a 96 cx with a D16Y7, but I don't have an owner's manual for it yet. Can anyone tell me the recommended speeds for shifting? Since I have no tachometer I just listen to the engine and watch the speedometer. So far I have had it up to 25 in 1st,40 in2nd, 60 in 3rd, 90 in 4th, and 105 in 5th. Anyone with an owner's manual or other relevant info please contribute to this thread.

yeah, what you listed sounds pretty good for a little aggressive driving, i've got the same motor, andi installed a factory tach, i can go 30, 50, 70, 90, 110 easily for aggressive driving. if u want, i'll post redline speeds outta my manual later 2night

Thanks for the reply, and yes please do post further info. What speeds can I downshift at? How difficult was it to install your tach? Was it worth the effort? I thought it would be nice to have one, but I'm not sure.

sorry, i'll post them soon, i just forgot. but, anyway, i don't think you need to worry about redlining without a tach, i drove my car pretty aggressively for a couple years just by the tone of the exhaust. and when i changed my cluster to one with a tach, i realized that i barely even broke 4000 rpm when i drove semi aggressively.

just wait 'till it bounces off the rev-limiter and then shift lol.... jk

As far as the tach thing goes, I don't think they're that hard to install (but I have no personal experience)... There's a post about installing tachs somewhere around here... I'll see if I can't dig it up for ya...

EDIT: here's a link that'll hopefully help alittle until I can find the one I was originally looking for:

no, don't get a big tach, get the factory cluster with the tach installed, it's a lot cleaner and less work, which i'm all about, plus the cost will come out to about the same.

I actually went from a 3" sunpro to an EX cluster and it's a strait plug n play operation. It took me longer to remove the aftermarket tach than it did to swap the speedo assemblies (to keep the mileage the same).
