Default Which tranny for turbo d16?

Hey guys, I have a ex tranny at the moment, but a buddy of mine has a cx tranny available. I heard the longer gears can be better for a turbo but I don't know that myself. Are both those trannies equal strength, or will the ex tranny hold up better?? As long as they are both equal in strength, I just want the best gearing for 1/4 and top speed if that's even possible. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

i wold thin kthat the CX tranny would be too long. that thing is made for gas mileage. maybe a dx trans, but i wouldnt go for the cx one.

dx/ex should be the only ones to consider......wide gearing is nice and all but too wide you run into problems to include, extra stress on the engine, extra heat in the engine. this is a debatable subject as far as which tranny to go with. some say the taller FD in the dx helps to stay in boost longer. some say the shorter FD in the ex helps you to accelerate faster. IMO get what suites your needs, i prefer the dx just for gas milage and drivability purposes.

stay with the ex cause your not going to hit a top speed on the 1/4.

If you want longer gears do not go with the CX tranny, they are too long. The next option for you would be a 96-00 civic lx sedan tranny. It has longer gears than the ex but not stupid long like the cx. The DX tranny in the coupe and hatch in the 6th gens are in between the lx and cx tranny gear wise.

Yeah, I was pretty sure of that too. My owners manual also has the ratios for the LX and DX the same and the EX shorter.

I'd stay wtiht he EX though... it'll give you the best acceleration and the top speed in 5th is way above what the engine will push it to so you don't really need to be worried about that.

the thing is, that the shorter gearing helps on an all-motor because the powerband is up high, but on a turbo motor, the powerband is wider, so dropping a little farther between shifts can be ok because you have the power to use it, and it can save you a shift.

Yeah, I see your point.

For the 1/4 mile you'd more than likely end up in 4th with either tranny on a turbo'd engine right? The EX would land you farther up in 4th and still have the same number of shifts. Which, I'm thinking would be better. Could be wrong though, I'm also thinking that the longer you can pull in the lower gears the better. I dunno which way to think, haha.

been a while since ive been on a 1/4 mile but on an 1/8 we get into 4th. id imagine a closer geared tranny would be a tid bit better for such a short track.
