Excellent story. I am getting ready to take my crankshaft out of my 95dx. While it's down I was thinking about taking my automatic to get it "rebuilt". You have inspired me to give it a try myself. I have a garage and floor jack. I was reading the procedure in the Haynes manual for removing it and it sounds do-able. Right before I parked it it was kind of slipping out of gear when I was making a sharp turn at low speed. Did you read about this symptom?
