Transmistion comes out of fifth gear
HI everyone. I am new here and would like to know if anyone can help me. I own a 2002 Honda Civic EX 4 door with a 5 speed tranny. I can drive all day inthe city and no problem. WhenI go on the hightway and drive avout a half hour to 45 minuntes into the drive the tannny will pop out of 5 gear. If I put it back in it will keep coming out every couple of minutes. I had this problem fixed and they said it was a bushing on the linkage and 150 dollars latter it is still doing it. I do not want to go back to bealer and pay for it again if the problem is going to persist. I looked at the linkage were it goes into the tranny and cannot see anything that could cause this. I do not know how to take the consol off inside the car ad I do not want to break the plastic soI canoot check there.
If anyone could help me please do.
Feel free to email me me at donrob1967@yahoo.ca if you want.

I just had this problem with my 99 civic ex except it was my third gear. I never heard anything about the linkage, but there is a good chance your synchronizer is going out if it is only messing with one gear. You need to get it fixed before the bearings start to go out or you will have to replace the entire transmission. Unfortunately I have to get my transmission rebuilt but it will run at about $450 for the service and repair which isn't too bad.
if it is a syncro why does it only do it after a while not all the time, Also like I said when I went to the dealer they said it was the busheing. I do not think they opened the trany
well at least its not 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th like my trans. but im really hard on my trannys, and it costs less to buy junkyard trannys that last 6 months. i'm on my third. but the real problems start when they don't come out of gear. like your 40 miles from home and your tranny won't come out of second gear and you can only push the clutch in for neutral.
How long has it been since you were at the dealer and they "fixed" it?? I would haul *** up there, raise some hell and get the to re-fix it for free. 02 tranny should NOT be giving you problems yet.
It was in august that I got it fixed. It happened when I was on vacation and had no choice but to get ti fixed. I asked them there if it was covered because whenI purchased the car I bought extra coverage.
They saud it was not.
When I returned hoem I went to my dealer and complained about it. They looked into and after 2 and a half months said it was not covered . It did not do it for a while but it stared again. Does anyone know how to take the console off between the seets as i want to check were the linkage is. I looked and can not find any screws that would hold it in place.

It's actually 99% not the synchros. Those are usually something easy to blame your tranny problems on, but in a situation like you're describing, it's almost always the bearings on whatever gear shaft happens to be causing the problem (in this case, 5th).
