Y21 rebuild problem
Recently rebuilt my Y21. I replaced all the seals, synchros, and bearings. The gears seem to turn just fine on the bench and seem to seal up just fine. When I put it back in the car I seem to be having 2 issues:
1. I hear what sounds like a loud rubbing sound on the passenger side (the piece of the case that lifts off). I pulled it back apart and the diff may have rubbed against that side of the case a bit. It didn't seem noticeable when on the bench. That is my guesstimate of where the sound was and the side seems a bit roughed up on the inside. I did replace both bearings on either side of the diff. When I first set the diff in it was rubbing against the side of the case where you set the shafts in. The tolerance seems very tight on either side of the diff. Is there a number I should be looking for or have others experienced this also?
2. I have the cable to hydro trans set up in the car. I have the car on the lift and the wheels seem to turn when even in neutral. Could something be sticking/related to the noise? I forgot to step on the brakes because of the loud rubbing noise.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
