Default My Civic...and the problems???

Alright.... I cant even go 2 sleep trying to think about my honda civic problems.... Im 17 and I have a 97 honda civic ex... D16Y8..

Well.. i have 2 problems with the car right now.. .

1. This is most serious problem of them all... I live in Texas and the summer can get really HOTT... and well.. my A/C during the city just blows out hot air...even with the A/C..on... I mean it doesnt even blow cold air after 20 minutes of driving. The only time i get cold air is whenever im doing 70 on the highway, besides that i just roll down the windows and drive.. Im moving to houston and i really want the A/C to work.. And by the way is it normal, whenever you turn on the A/C of your car, that the car kind of feels like a 300lbs have been added to your car? What should i do to make my A/C blow cold air???

2. Next whenever..i have my A/C on the the rpm jumps... and make a loud noise as if the engine just falls and then rises.. To be honest its actually embarrasing at the stop lights, but I LOVE MY CAR!!! .. I dont how to describe this..but the rpm just jumps...and then it goes away...and at the next stop light it comes back.... I have an old-school Iceman Intake system and the intake reducer that connects from the Intake manifold to the intake tube has a crack in it, since the rubber is all hardened. Is this whats causing the problem?? I realize there is a leak somewhere and rich air is mixing in or i think it is?? What other things could it be..

Just anything else that might help yal in helping me:

Engine: D16y8
model: Coupe
Intake: Iceman intake w/ good/poor filter
Oil Used: Castrol Syntec
latest reading: 173,668
Last Oil change: 169,000
Transmission: Manual

If you need pics of anything... just tell me and ill get them to help yal help me.. =)

Help me Honda forum ppl!!!!!

BTW..congrats to Mil$ on ROTM, I like your setup very much, and mine kinda looks like urs.. except cooler =P

1) the ac is a closed system - freon should stay at the level it is charged to. assuming the compressor is coming on, i would say that you have a freon leak - need to check the low and high side pressure.

2) sounds like a vacuum leak. turning the ac ON will pull down the idle speed; the built-in controls are designed to bring the idle speed back to normal. the IACV (idle air control valve - also called EACV (electronic air control valve)) is designed to do that job. it may be defective, although in your case, that does not seem to be the case. anyway, fix the vacuum leaks first.

# 1 ......have the a/c system evacuated, and recharged , hav eshop put some DYE in the system so they can later chk for leaks

by the way ,, did anyone charge you a/c system recently and possibly overcharged it ??

# 2 As austin says i would chk for any vacc leaks

This is normal. The A/C put a large strain on the pulleys which in turn cause the engine to work harder. This is especially true in very hot climates!!!

This is the reason that I dumped my entire AC setup - the system itself weighs over 60 performance robbing pounds. Then again, I don't live in Texas where A/C is mandatory to maintain human exsistance.

if you want to chk n a/c system for leaks,, first of all make sure that there is enough freon in the sytem to engage the compressor,, than you put TRACER DYE into the system, that way if there is a leak you can see where the dye is coming out of,, you will need an ultra violet light to see the dye ......

if you DO NOT put dye in the system you will not locate the leak unless it is big enough that you can hear it hissing as freon comes out
