Mechanical Problems & Technical Chat - Oil Filter

I did a service on the weekend and to the mislead advice of a commodore mate of mine, I didnt do my oil filter up tight enough, resulting in loosing 4 L of oil in the car park.... twice. I thought we had it sorted until I noticed a puddle forming under my car in the maccas car park. It turns out it still wasnt on tight enough. I lost another 1.5 L. I got the wrench out of the tool box and tightened her up again further still. The commis are screw till finger tight than back half a turn. I take it the civics are different. Anywho, the point is, how tight do you do the filters up, cause mine is pretty bloody tight, so I think it might be cross threaded cause I think I might still be loosing oil.

sounds like maybe you still have the gasket from the old filter on there still
take the filter off & make sure you dont have 2 gaskets on there
if not put it back on hand tight , but tight as you can turn it, (by hand)dont back off a 1/2 turn
but if it still leaks just get a new filter & try that

I tighten by hand 3/4 to one full turn after the gasket makes contact. That's it. No tools.

Are you sure you aren't losing oil from a loose drain plug?

Do you have thecorrect oil filter?

Ya its not because of the tightness of the oil filter, somthing else is definitely wrong. You are sopposed to do what he said^^,by hand 3/4 to one full turn after the gasket makes contact. No tools to tighten it or you can brake the seal.

I always tighten filters hand tight, which means hard as I can by hard (without bieng excessive). I've never had a problem, the filters never leak and I never have a problem getting the filters off. Never tighten filters with a wrench or any type of tool. I think dealers do this (last couple times i've changed oil on a car that was at the dealer for the previous oil change had a filter that was excessivly tight). Always check the old filter for the gasket when you take it off. What I do is push the new filter and the old filter together. This will ensure that you have the correct filter. The act of pushing them together will also lube up the new filter and ensure that the old gasket is not stuck on the car.
