Default side-to-side wheel play?

96 civic hx

Had about an inch of side-to-side wheel play, heard the clunks and the CV boots were ripped so I replaced my outer CV axles.

Now I have about a millimeter of side to side play still have clunk but that I think is another story. Basically, is this mm of side to side play ok?

thanks

Did you replace only the boots or the entire axles? If you only replaced the boots, the clunking sound suggests that the entire axle needs replacement.

If your tie rod bushings are fine, here's how to adjust the steering wheel free play:

Thanks for the reply.

Is that something a shop would do during an alignment (steering rack adjustment)? B/c my civic definitely needs an alignment, getting one this week.

I did replace the entire axle on both sides. Also have brand new tie rods. thanks

The procedure is separate from a wheel alignment. In addition, you may first want to fix the clunking sound in the front suspension. Where's the noise coming from?

The clunk is a still a mystery:

Think it might be a motor mount, need to further investigate that...
