RE: turbos effect on hp and fuel economy
If you stay out of boost, you should be able to get good fuel economy. You can also use a boost controller to keep the boost down when you want good fuel economy. Then you can put the boost up when you want to race or something.

ALMOST anything that adds power,if use properly, can add fuel economy. essential it is all the same concept of making your car more effiecent, whether u use that power for saving money or wasteing ricers is your call.

Hey speedy...
I am guessing you are new to all of this. If you are going to add a turbo to your Civic, I/H/(and likely)E are a waste of time and money.
Before you start thinking of a turbo, make sure you understand all of the costs that will be involved, along with increasing your knowledge.
Turbo's will replace your header and intake systems.
You will want to research turbo systems, you will need to upgrade your clutch, likely purchase some sort of computer to run your car properly, larger injectors, larger exhaust, etc.
I know little about Civics, having just purchased a 1999 for a cheap commuter, but I have a 300HP Miata in the garage that I turbocharged. It is a worthwile effort, but you need to know a little more than you do now...oryou will be another ad on craigslist selling a project car.
Oh, and btw, my 1992 Miata gets better economy under normal circumstances than it did stock. Around 31 MPG and triple the stock HP.
If I am driving in a spririted way, much lower.
